I’ve been running an introduction to greenwood spoon carving course for a while now, both through community education providers and from my own workshop. I usually run them when I get an expression of interest from one or more people, but I am looking to schedule regular courses which people can sign up to via this website (with plenty of notice!). They run over a full Saturday or Sunday (9-4) generally with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 people, and all tools, materials and a bite of lunch are provided.
The introductory course covers everything to get you started, including greenwood properties, sourcing, selection and preparation, tool design and maintenance, axe-work and knife techniques/grips, and spoon design and finishing. I’m also keen to run a follow-on course for more experienced carvers, but this may look more like a ‘spoon club’, which people can attend to hone their skills with support and advice from me and the other attendees.
Until I’ve got things more organised, please feel free to contact me via email (samuelkeer@outlook.co.nz) or Instagram through the links below if you are interested attending or arranging a course (i.e. individually or as a group).
